STONE CONSERVATION PROJECTS

REPLACEMENT NEW BEER STONE MULLION AND MORTAR REPAIRS.
THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY CROSS, CREDITON

French and Son has repaired dozens of stone windows in Devon and Somerset. This particular window needed a new piece of Beer Stone carved for the mullion and mortar repairs to the rest of the surrounding Medieval Stonework. The ferramenta (iron window bars) were also re-tipped in stainless steel and painted.

RE-LOCATION OF A NORMAN FONT, WHITESTAUNTON, SOMERSET.

During 2016 we moved three different fonts to enable the re-ordering of religious buildings, helping to adapt the building to be fit for future purposes.

We have moved fonts and monuments in St. Davids Church, Exeter, Paignton Parish Church, Plymouth Cathedral and St. Pauls, Bristol.

BUCKFAST ABBEY ALTAR COSMATI PAVEMENT, DEVON

French & Son supplied approximately 30,000 pieces of antique marble and hard-stone for the completion of the altar pavement at Buckfast Abbey. The stones supplied included Purple Egyptian Porphyry, Green Greek Porphyry and Sienna marble from Italy.

Egyptian Porphyry is an historically important stone having been used during the Roman Period for Imperial Sarcophagi, and the monumental columns in Hagia Sophia, Istanbul.

THE WEST WINDOW, THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY CROSS, CREDITON, DEVON

Since replacing all of the corroding ironwork, 108 saddle bars and the tie bar through the width of the window in 2011, we have returned to complete numerous other successful projects, including; repairs to mullion windows, pointing, re-building of monuments, and repair work to paving.

NEW CARVED STONE PINNACLES AT THE APEX OF THE WEST FRONT, EXETER CATHEDRAL

During 2013 French & Son carved replacement pinnacles for the apex of the West Front of Exeter Cathedral.

We have supplied carved pinnacles and crosses to numerous churches including, St. Pauls Bristol, St. Johns Torquay, St. Andrews Cullompton and St. Michaels Alphington.
